Dustex is a proven dust suppressant.

DUSTEX is one of Borregaard LignoTech’s lignosulphonate products. DUSTEX is an organic, non-toxic sand and soil stabiliser with the properties required of a good binder to prevent wind erosion. The powder is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and binds the water in the ground. These characteristics makes good dust suppression.

DUSTEX is an excellent binder for most types of minerals and humus materials. It acts as a binder and glues the particles together. When used in a top layer this becomes so stiff that individual particle movement is eliminated creating excellent dust suppression.

Dust Suppression Prevents Erosion

A DUSTEX-bounded surface is hard and presents resistance against winds up to gale force. The use of DUSTEX as a binder reduces unpleasant dust and disturbing sand blast making Dustex a key product when combatting dust suppression. When the DUSTEX solution is sucked into the top layer it makes an effective adhesive bond between the sand particles and a hard crust is formed when the surface dries. Wet sand resists very high wind velocities, but dry sand swifts readily at a wind velocity of 2 – 3 m/s. According to our tests a DUSTEX treatment of 0,05-0, 15kg/m2 is sufficient for dry sand surfaces to withstand wind velocities up to 40 m/s.

Rather, Dustex is an environmentally beneficial product, reducing dust exposure for humans and animals and eliminating dust coverage of roadside foliage.

Dustex is an organic, non-toxic sand and soil stabiliser which, when applied to the broadacre, binds surface particles, arrests soil erosion, controls dust and facilitates plant regeneration.

A lignosulphonate liquid concentrate, Dustex is readily water-soluble and when sprayed directly onto the surface at recommended rates will consolidate the soil particles to form a bonded crusty layer, trapping the sub-surface moisture.

The improved water economy assists seed germination and, with the product’s natural nutritive components, promotes the establishment of vigorous young plants.

Dustex is hygroscopic. Moisture drawn from the atmosphere increases the plasticity of the treated surface which allows normal growth of new vegetation.

The durability of the treatment is determined by the strength of the Dustex mixture, the evenness of application and the depth of penetration into the soil. For protection against wind erosion the minimum recommended thickness of the treated surface layer is 3-5mm, and for protection against wind erosion and moderate dynamic loads, 10-15mm.

• Application Procedure: Dustex is best applied as an aqueous solution under pressure through spray nozzles, although it may also be applied with equipment as simple as a hose.
1. If practicable water the surface of the target area.
2. Apply Dustex solution at the recommended rate of one litre per square metre. There are many variables which may influence this procedure and the rate of application and the strength of the Dustex solution should be adjusted to suit. Dustex applications of 50 to 150 grams per square metre will keep dry sand surfaces stable against wind velocities up to 140 kilometres per hour.
• Application Rate: One litre per square metre.
• Solution Strength: On surfaces not subject to general traffic, a Dustex application of 80 – 120 grams per square metre will consolidate most types of mineral and humus materials for up to six months.

Dustex can be applied either by incorporating or mixing the product into the road material during the construction phase or as a spray-on application when treating formed and compacted surfaces.

Method 1

The Dustex “mix-in” method is used to bind and stabilise a layer with a thickness between 50 and 100mm. The lignosulphonate glues the particles together, eliminating the individual particle movement which results in surface deterioration and dust.

The product is incorporated into the road material during the water binding process using conventional road making equipment or a high-capacity road stabiliser.

The quantity of Dustex required is between one and three per cent of the weight of the material to be bound (calculated as dry matter on dry aggregate).

The material to be bound should contain six to eight per cent of fines with a maximum aggregate size of 10 per cent of the target stabilisation depth.

The road is tyned to the required depth, the windrows sprayed with the Dustex solution and the material thoroughly blade mixed to ensure even distribution. The material is then laid out and compacted. A slurry coat of diluted Dustex solution may be applied as a surface seal.

Tips and Tricks

• During the mixing and compaction procedures it is important to maintain optimum moisture content.
• Ideally the road should be formed with a 2-3 per cent crown to facilitate rapid drainage.
• Avoid saturating the road as excessive water could leach the product from the surface.
• If the treated surface requires grading, first wet the area. Do not grade dry material.
• If necessary, a diluted Dustex solution (10 grams per square metre) may be applied to restore the integrity of a treated surface after heavy rain, when the surface starts to dust again or to control fugitive dust.

Method 2

The surface spray-on treatment takes longer to achieve effective dust control and stabilisation but field experience has demonstrated that for compact surfaces such as haul roads the method achieves effective penetration of Dustex into the road surface and provides a lower cost option due to reduced equipment requirements. Minimal disruption to traffic is an additional benefit.

The application is simple. Dustex is added to the water cart at the recommended concentration and sprayed directly onto the road surface.

Several passes of the water cart will be required over a two day period as care must be taken to ensure the product has been absorbed into the road before more Dustex is applied and the target concentration reached.

• Significantly reduce or eliminate dust
• Reduce road-water usage by up to 90 per cent
• Provide a hard, smooth dust-free running surface with excellent traction in wet or dry conditions
• Significantly reduce road maintenance costs
• Consolidate and improve the quality of the in situ road material
• Increase the load-bearing capacity of existing road material

The simplest form of dust control consists of a direct application of Dustex solution onto an unprepared surface. This "instant" or spray-on dust suppression method is used to treat:

• Batters
• Construction sites
• Earthworks
• Quarries
• Open areas and virtually anywhere the incidence of health-threatening dust inhibits safe and efficient operations. It is the easiest and most cost effective way to achieve a dust-free environment and is more effective than multiple applications of water.

The product may be added to a water cart and applied as a diluted solution under pressure through spray nozzles, although it may also be applied under gravity with equipment as simple as a hose. A water cart equipped with a pump and spray bar is ideal.

Dustex is readily water-soluble and when sprayed directly onto an unprepared surface will consolidate the soil to form a well- bonded crusty layer.

The durability of the treatment is determined by the strength of the Dustex mixture, the evenness of application, the depth of penetration into the soil and the properties of the material being treated.
